Federal Court to FMC: we respect you, as long as you’re not part of us

The Federal Court Chief Justice Michael Black has said that a merger of the Federal Court with the general division of the Federal Magistrates Court was “bad policy” and would threaten the Federal Court’s “high reputation”.

The Federal Government’s Semple Inquiry recommended that the Federal Magistrates Court be split, with the family division to be merged with the Family Court, and the general division merged with Federal Court.

He added “the get-the-job-done informality that has developed in the FMC in its general federal law work should be preserved and fostered”.
