More Australian Surrogacy Births in Australia than in the US in 2023
The latest data has revealed that more Australian children have been born via surrogacy at home than in the United States in 2023.
The latest report by the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproductive Database, and its New Zealand equivalent, show that in the year ended 30 June 2023, 84 babies were born via gestational surrogacy in Australia. This is a drop of 30 from the previous year of 114, which was a record. 84 is the second highest ever.
By comparison, in the calendar year 2023, 236 Australian babies were born overseas through surrogacy, according to data published by the Department of Home Affairs, of which 68 were born in the United States.
In most recent years about the same or more Australian babies have been born via surrogacy in the United States than in Australia.
In 2024, a record 376 Australian babies were born overseas via surrogacy, of which 121 were born in the United States. In 2025, a record 377 Australian babies were born overseas via surrogacy, of which 137 were born in the United States.
The numbers demonstrate, yet again, why surrogacy reform in Australia is overdue.
