What really works to stop violence against women:Australia’s backyard

A new report draws lessons from local approaches to curb violence against women in Melanesia and East Timor, where the problem is severe, pervasive and constrains development in the region. Ending violence against women is crucial to achieving gender equality and positive development outcomes.

The new report Violence against Women in Melanesia and East Timor sponsored by among others the Federal Government, assesses programs that successfully tackle violence in their communities, and lays out best practices to tackle violence in a sustainable and scalable way.

It also highlights three key approaches to reducing violence against women:
(1) increase women’s access to justice,
(2) increase women’s access to support services and
(3) prevent violence through awareness of gender inequality.
