Why don’t people just leave?

I came across an article in the wonderfully named Lovefraud.com blog, a site that specialises in talking about sociopaths, which talks about why people don’t leave abusive relationships- suggesting that the more people are exposed to and tolerate the conduct, then the more they are habituated to it and don’t leave.
